Royal family tradition that means Prince Andrew's title could be given to Prince Louis

A lot of the members of the royal family have more than one important titles and styles that date back centuries, which still continue today.

Now, there is set to be a lot of changes ahead for the younger members of the family and their titles, reports MyLondon. The first change is due to happen approximately in the next decade.

The late monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, had 12 great-grandchildren, and three of them will carry several different titles in their lifetime - with some of them holding huge historical importance.

While Prince George and Princess Charlotte will both take on some of the most important titles eventually, their younger brother Prince Louis is expected to hold a title that has significant ties to royal history. It also has a particular sentimental connection to the late Queen.

Prince Louis Arthur Charles was born on April 23, 2018, at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and lives with his family in Apartment 1A of Kensington Palace and at Anmer Hall in Norfolk. His current and official title is His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Wales and he sits fourth-in-line to the throne.

His title will change if he marries or his father becomes the King. Following the Queen's death, Prince William's title officially shifted from The Duke of Cambridge to the Prince of Wales.

Now, Prince Louis and his siblings are all regarded as Princes and Princesses. Looking even further into the future, Prince Louis would be next in line to inherit a historic Dukedom when he marries.

Just like his father was made the Duke of Cambridge, and his uncle, Prince Harry, was made the Duke of Sussex when he married Meghan Markle, Louis could one day be the Duke of York.

The current holder of the title is Prince Andrew so it would be unavailable to Louis if Andrew was still alive when he chooses to marry. According to tradition, the Duke of York title is given to the monarch's second-oldest son, so if Prince William is on the throne when Louis marries, and the title is vacant - then it is his.

The previous holders of the Duke of York title include the late Queen’s grandfather, King George V and her father, King George VI - meaning she was known as Princess Elizabeth of York until her father became the king in 1936. So, there were several significant sentimental links for the Queen.

The monarch opted to give the title to Prince Andrew - who was widely regarded to be her favourite son - when he married Sarah Ferguson in 1986. After the announcement that the City of York had removed Prince Andrew's honorary 'Freedom of the City of York' position, questions were raised as to whether his mother would further strip him of his royal titles.

York City representatives announced further calls for the late Queen to step in and order Andrew to stop using his princely style which was bestowed to him when he was born in 1960. However, it is more complicated than that, as the monarch cannot act alone in removing peerage titles.

Attempting to remove Andrew's official title would have to be fronted by Parliament, with a statute passed by both of the House of Commons and the Lords.

Prince George would also receive a significant title if his father becomes King, as he would take on the Prince of Wales title once he marries. Princess Charlotte would also be in for major changes, as upon her father's accession and the death of Princess Anne, Charlotte would become the next Princess Royal.

This title is traditionally given to the eldest daughter of the monarch and is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a female member of the Royal Family by the sovereign. It has also been recently reported that King Charles hopes to one day bestow the Dukedom of Edinburgh to Charlotte - which would make her the Duchess of Edinburgh in her own right.

A source told the Mail on Sunday: "Discussions are under way, but the favoured outcome for the King is that this title ought to go to Princess Charlotte.

"It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen – who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh – and a way for His Majesty to honour the line of succession."
