Princess Sophie-Alexandra of Bavaria and her husband, Prince Ludwig, are expecting their first child, as reported by German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine. The 35-year-old Princess hinted at her pregnancy during a recent speech about the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals, mentioning that she would be unable to participate in a fundraiser in September due to her nearing due date.
Prince Ludwig, in line to become the future head of the House of Wittelsbach, is the great-great-grandson of King Ludwig III, the last King of Bavaria. Despite the monarchy's dissolution in 1918, the Bavarian royal family has continued ceremoniously. Prince Ludwig, who studied law in Germany and has been involved in various non-profit organizations in rural Kenya, also carries out representative and honorary duties in Bavaria.
The couple's royal wedding in May 2023 made headlines when Princess Sophie fainted during the church ceremony but quickly recovered. The bride, a dual Dutch/Canadian citizen and a doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford, married Prince Ludwig at Theatiner Church in Munich. The ceremony was followed by a celebratory reception at Nymphenburg Palace hosted by Duke Franz of Bavaria.
Prince Ludwig's father, Prince Luitpold, expressed his excitement about welcoming Sophie into the family and his hopes of becoming a grandfather soon. The couple's baby, expected to be a boy, would follow Prince Ludwig in the line of succession.
