Royal Ascot makes rare change to strict dress code due to scorching heatwave

The formal dress code at Royal Ascot has been relaxed in a first for the racing event due to the high summer temperatures.

The special week of horse races is held in June each year, attended by a string of famous faces including members of the Royal family. Held in Berkshire, the Met Office predicted sweltering temperatures of up to 31° in the region on Thursday.

As a result, Royal Ascot announced the news that their dress code would be relaxed in all Enclosures. They clarified that this meant racegoers would be permitted to remove their hats, ties and jackets following the Royal Procession, led by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The change marked a rare departure from tradition at the event, which typically sports an ultra-formal dress code. Whilst the necessary attire differs slightly between Enclosures, in the most formal Royal Enclosure men are specifically required to wear a waistcoat and tie - no cravats or bow ties allowed - a black or grey top hat, and black shoes worn with socks.

The ladies’ dress code in the Royal Enclosure is just as strict, stating that dresses and skirts must be no shorter than just above the knee. Strapless, off-the-shoulder, halter-neck or spaghetti strap tops are not allowed, hats - or headpieces with a base of at least 4 inches - must be worn, and trouser suits are permitted as long as they match in material and colour.

Even in the most relaxed Windsor Enclosure, attendees are encouraged to wear “smart daywear” which includes a hat or fascinator for ladies and a jacket with collared shirt for gentlemen. The amendment to the dress code will no doubt have been welcomed by racegoers as temperatures soared in the heatwave.
