Frankie Dettori was unable to sign off in fairytale fashion on his final day at Royal Ascot. While his book of rides on Saturday looked a promising one in his mission to add to his 81 winners at the big meeting, Dettori’s best finish of the afternoon was a fourth place with Mums Tipple in the Wokingham Stakes.
Covey was well beaten as favourite in the Jersey Stakes and Free Wind was unable to land a blow in the Hardwicke. The 52-year-old had bounced back from a disappointing first day when he went winless to enjoy some spectacular successes this week, including the Gold Cup aboard Courage Mon Ami.
The racing great arrived for his final day at Royal Ascot in the grandest possible fashion as part of the royal procession. Dettori and his wife, Catherine, were in carriage four with Jamie Snowden and his wife, Lucy.
Khaadem caused an 80-1 upset in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, while Saint Lawrence returned to winning ways in the Wokingham Stakes to oblige on his first start for Archie Watson and provide Hollie Doyle with a third victory at this year’s meet.
