Royal Ascot 2022: Armed police and drones to be deployed in huge security operation

Armed police and drones will be deployed at Royal Ascot for the Queen's favourite meeting.

The huge event, which kicks off on June 14, takes a massive amount of planning with the royals and around 250,000 guests in attendance.

Over the course of five days, that number of racegoers will head through the turnstiles, wearing their best outfits for the social occasion.

It has not been confirmed yet whether the Queen will be going. Royal Ascot is known as the monarch's preferred fixture – as she has only ever missed it three times in her reign.

Absent at the Derby, where there were no runners sporting the royal silks over the Platinum Jubilee weekend, this time there will be horses in action for Her Majesty.

A select group is led by Reach For The Moon, favourite for the Hampton Court Stakes on June 16.

Twelve months ago, Princess Anne, Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were among the royals at the top fixture.

Thames Police tactical commander Superintendent Rory Freeman has advised paying fans to consider the number of items they take to the event to assist with searches on entry.

He said: "The atmosphere of the prestigious Royal Ascot event is always one of excitement and celebration. With the attendance of the royal family alongside the many racegoers, our planning with Ascot Racecourse Limited to ensure the safety of all those attending has been extensive, carefully considered and underway for some time."

Ascot chiefs are limiting the number of racegoers next week, after a smaller number enjoyed the sporting action in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Among the plans is for the Royal Enclosure's capacity to be cut by 1,000 people, while the the Queen Anne and Windsor Enclosures will be reduced by 4,150 and 2,000 respectively.

Superintendent Freeman added in his message to guests: "If you plan to be in Ascot during the event period, you will see many of our officers from a number of teams including mounted, firearms and roads policing as well as many out patrolling on foot.

"Many of our security measures will not be as obvious such as our drone unit who will be keeping a watchful eye over proceedings but please be reassured that all of our officers and additional measures are in place to keep you safe.

“Whilst we have many officers in the area, you will always have a unique perspective from what you can see and hear first hand. I encourage you to call out inappropriate behaviour of friends against women and girls and report it. Please remain vigilant for anything that seems suspicious."
