Royal Alexandra Hospital radio show nominated for award

Listeners and volunteers of the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) radio station will be keeping their ear to the ground after it was shortlisted for an award

The station have been short-listed in four categories of the UK-wide hospital radio awards which will be revealed on Monday, August 28.

The volunteers at Hospital Broadcasting Service (HBS) which has been providing daily radio shows to patients in local hospitals including the RAH for more than fifty years are excited with the news.

Volunteers of the hospital radio help provide entertainment, news and a source of contact for people within the hospital, whether that is for patients or staff.

The station is through to the final ten for their Rock Show by Graeme Ferguson, Best Newcomer by Hannah Gilchrist, Request Show by Louise Hannah and a special documentary on the launch of the radio station fifty years ago.

HBS Chairman Niall Anderson who started volunteering while still a pupil at Paisley Grammar said: “Despite all the covid restrictions which meant we haven’t been able to meet directly with the patients for more than two years, it’s fantastic the judges who are healthcare and broadcasting professionals have recognised the exceptional service that the team have been able to keep delivering”.

Hospital radio in Glasgow and Paisley was founded by Norman Ross who was one of the first to start a radio station that would be suited and situated within hospitals.

Norman started the station in the 1970s and has loved being part of hospitals ever since.

The radio station also allows inspiring media broadcasters and journalists to practise and develop their skills on live radio, with many of the volunteer students who have an interest in the media industry.

HBS is also on the lookout for any former volunteers from the last 50 years as there is a celebration event on Thursday, October 13 to which they are all invited. If you want to find out more, send an email to studio@hbs.org.uk. They are also looking for new volunteers to join the team, further information can be found online at www.hbs.org.uk
