Roy Keane verdict on 'fantastic' Maxwel Cornet as Burnley winger linked with Newcastle

Roy Keane was impressed by Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet’s debut campaign in England, despite the Clarets suffering relegation to the Championship. The Ivorian has been offered to the Magpies along with Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis and has a £17.5 million release clause which Newcastle could capitalise on.

Newcastle have already prised Nick Pope and Chris Wood away from Turf Moor. Cornet only joined Burnley from Lyon for a reported fee of €12 million last summer and has four years left on his contract.

He scored nine goals in 26 appearances in all competitions for the Clarets last term but failed to prevent them from succumbing to relegation. Although his first year ended in heartache, Keane believes that Cornet made a good impression.

“He started the season really well with some real quality goals,” Keane told Sky Sports . “The variation of his goals. Brilliant strike-rate and technique. He is obviously a big plus to Burnley. He hit the ground running, with some brilliant strikes. Fantastic. He had a little bit of a dip when he came back from the African Cup of Nations, but that can happen.”

Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest and Fulham are also keen on the 25-year-old. Lancashire Live reported on Monday that Cornet has returned to training with the Clarets and is not angling for a move, but also revealed that Burnley are powerless to prevent him from leaving should a team meet his release clause.
