Roy Keane tells Erik ten Hag he should resign immediately after winning Carabao Cup

Roy Keane has joked with Erik ten Hag that he should resign after he was seen dancing following Manchester United's Carabao Cup win.

The Dutchman has ended the club's six-year wait for a trophy by orchestrating their 2-0 success over Newcastle at Wembley. Marcus Rashford and Casemiro scored first-half goals to secure the win with celebrations breaking out at full-time.

Antony and Lisandro Martinez, two men who signed for United in the summer as they chose to follow Ten Hag from Ajax, were seen donning their country's flags as they celebrated with Ten Hag, before breaking out into a dance that the coach also got involved with - prompting Keane to jokingly claim he should leave.

The Irishman said on Sky Sports : "You should resign after that". Ten Hag replied: "Never. We have a history with that (from Ajax). I hope we can do it more often."

He also joked that only he and the coaches were able to drink the champagne, due to the players being involved in another game just days later. "Managers and staff, it is champagne. For the players, they rest, they have a big game on Wednesday," he said.

Ten Hag is also hopefully that their first triumph can be a catalyst for more success. "First you have to win the first one, and that is what we did. I think we can get inspiration from this and confidence that we can do it," he added. "We said at the start that we wanted to restore Manchester United by winning trophies and this is the first one."

United remain in contention for the FA Cup, Europa League and still have an outside chance of mounting a Premier League title charge. Ten Hag, who has experience of winning during his Ajax tenure, has been able to have an instant impact in Manchester, drawing huge praise.

Gary Neville has commented on the Dutchman's ability to get the big calls right. He said: "The big things, leaving Marcus Rashford out after doing so well for being late, the way in which he handled the Ronaldo situation and leaving out Harry Maguire, those are massive decisions and could have quite easily gone the wrong way.

"But I think he has assumed control of the club again. You think of Guardiola and Klopp and know they are the most important people at the football club, but Ten Hag today and in the last few months has just taken control of Manchester United again. The fans love Casemiro and love Rashford, but when he lifted the trophy, they know who the most important person is."
