Roy Keane's family life that he likes to keep out of the public eye - wife Theresa and why he deleted Instagram

Roy Keane is on punditry duty for his former club Manchester United's Premier League clash with their biggest rivals Liverpool on Monday night.

Erik ten Hag has had a dismal start to his reign at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils having lost their opening two league games against Brighton and Brentford respectively.

Keane singled out Fred and Scott McTominay for criticism following United's opening weekend to Brighton and he surely won't hold back if either player disappoint against Liverpool.

The former United captain surprised many people when set up an Instagram account during lockdown.

Keane sent the social medial platform into meltdown when he posted a selfie with his dog as he offered an insight into his life away from the Sky Sports cameras.

Keane then went one step further by offering fans a rare glimpse into his family life when he posted a picture of himself holding his little grandson, with both appearing to frown at the camera, and captioned the sweet post: “Just like his granddad”.

It was a surprising move from a man who rarely discuss his personal life and suggested that Keane may be softening in recent years compared to the hardman image many have of him from his playing days.

Here we take a deeper look into the family life of one of Ireland's greatest ever sportsmen.

Keane has been married to his wife Theresa Doyle for more than 20 years and the couple have five children together.

The pair met in 1992 while Keane was playing for Nottingham Forest and they tied the knot at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in his native Mayfield in Cork in 1997.

Describing the first time he met Theresa, who was born in Nottingham but whose family hail from Ireland, Keane recalled: "I spotted a beautiful girl in a club in town. Her name was Theresa Doyle but she blanked me.

"She was in a steady relationship and didn't seem at all impressed by Roy Keane, the great footballer. In fact, I think my reputation was as a downer for all kinds of reasons.

"From time to time we ran into each other around Nottingham. I knew some of her friends, who told me Theresa was a dentist's assistant. Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love."

While Keane rarely discuss his wife to the media, he did open up about their relationship in an interview with David Walsh of the Sunday Times in the early 00s, hailing Theresa as his 'rock'.

“I don’t really mention her in public, but in fairness to her, she has been a rock in my life. Just brilliant. She reads me better than I read myself," Keane revealed.

“I wouldn’t say Theresa likes every part of the package. She knows I haven’t got a halo over my head. Actually, that’s what she likes about me. She also knows I am not the nastiest person in the world.”

Five kids

Keane is the proud father to five children: Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna.

Despite his successes on the pitch, Keane has admitted that the thing he cherishes most is spending time with his family.

After winning the Champions League with Manchester United in 1999, Keane wrote in his autobiography that instead of celebrating with his teammates, he just "...longed to go home to Theresa and the kids."

The former Sunderland manager previously joked about hoping to spend more time with his wife and kids after hanging up his boots, but said they wanted him to get back to work after just two months.

Roy quipped: “My plan when I first stopped was, we’re going to go on some family trips, we’re going to be like the Waltons.

“We’re all going to spend time together, go walk in the park and after a month or two they didn’t have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work.

“I got offered the job at Sunderland and I was away on a family holiday and my family were looking at me... not saying it directly but going we kind of enjoy your company but not too much of it so when the job came back up they were saying you should go for it.”

Parents

The Republic of Ireland legend's father Maurice “Mossie” Keane met his mother Marie at a local dance and the pair were married on August 10, 1963.

Soon after tying the knot, the couple moved to Mayfair to raise their five children Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy and Pat.

Keane has always been close with his parents and he regularly paid for his family to come over to Nottingham and Manchester for matches.

He also dug into his own pockets to help his parents relocate to a house in the countryside at Rathpeacon, 10 minutes from their old neighbourhood.

The 49-year-old was left devastated when his father Mossie - one of 15 children born to his parents in Evergreen Buildings in Cork - passed away in 2019 after battling illness for a time.

Playing career

Keane began his soccer career playing for Rockmount AFC as a schoolboy before joining Cobh Ramblers in 1989.

While plying his trade in Irish football’s second tier, Keane did enough to earn a trial at Nottingham Forest, after impressing their scout, Noel McCabe.

After making 114 appearances and scoring 22, Keane got the call from Alex Ferguson and made his way to Old Trafford for £3.75 million, a British transfer record at the time.

Keane would go on to became captain of one of England's most successful ever dynasty's and cement himself as one of the greatest players of his generation.

The midfield enforcer played 326 times for United, winning the Champions League, seven Premier League titles and four FA Cups in a period of domestic dominance.

He ended his career in Celtic where he made 10 appearances - retiring in 2006.

Keane played 65 times between 1991 and 2005 for the Republic of Ireland and was named captain of the national team, but his international career is perhaps best remembered for his falling out with Mick McCarthy ahead of the 2002 World Cup.

The Cork man left the Irish camp before the tournament kicked off after being less than impressed by the Ireland camp's set-up.

Following a confrontation with McCarthy in the team hotel, Keane flew home as the Republic of Ireland made it to the Round of 16 stage before being knocked out by Spain after a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat.

Managerial career

After calling time on his playing career, Keane made the move into management to mixed results.

His first spell at Sunderland was considered a roaring success in most people's eyes.

Sunderland went from second bottom in the Championship to title-winners in his first season and began a lengthy stay in the top flight before Keane left in 2008.

A spell at Ipswich followed but he failed earn promotion to the Premier League and was dismissed in January 2011.

Keane then returned to the national team as assistant manager under Martin O'Neill, and was part of the coaching team which lead the Republic of Ireland to Euro 2016.

However, the team's form dropped off following the tournament and Keane and O'Neill left their jobs by "mutual agreement" in November 2018, with the pair briefly reuniting at Nottingham Forest in 2019.

Why did he quit Instagram?

Keane left many of his followers disappointed when he quit Instagram earlier this year.

Explaining why he did so, Keane told Off The Ball recently: "I'm sure people will get over it and survive! I've said it before, I done it for a bit of fun. With Covid, my youngest daughter was insistent I did it for a bit of fun.

"But it's moved on now, a bit of closure on it."
