Roy Keane recalls his 'wet n wild' World Cup 'highlight' that had nothing to do with football

Roy Keane has joked that the highlight of his World Cups as a player was going to the waterparks in Florida during the 1994 tournament.

The Manchester United legend was part of Jack Charlton's squad for USA 94, playing every minute of the Boys in Green's four fixtures.

Ireland's tournament began with a famous victory as they defeated Italy at the Giant's Stadium in New Jersey thanks to a Ray Houghton goal before they lost 2-1 to Mexico in Florida, but a 0-0 draw with Norway back in New Jersey was enough to send them through to the knockout stages.

With six days between the Norway clash and the quarter-final against the Netherlands, Ireland's squad headed back to Florida, where they would lose 2-0 to the Dutch through goals from Denis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk.

But Keane has joked the highlight of the tournament for him was heading to the waterparks in The Sunshine State with his teammates.

Speaking to Micah Richards and Gary Neville on a World Cup preview for Sky Bet, Keane explained: "The highlight of my career in terms of World Cups, obviously was 1994, but that was going to the waterparks in Florida in between the games. It was brilliant.

"Wet 'n Wild Waterpark. Yeah it was brilliant. You know, when you get days off, which we got plenty with Ireland, we'd go straight down to the waterpark. Brilliant, honestly. Wet 'n Wild, recommend it."

Of course the 1994 tournament would be Keane's only appearance at a World Cup, with a row between the Cork native and Ireland manager Mick McCarthy leading to Keane leaving Ireland's training camp in Saipan prior to the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.

And a recent poll by Ladbrokes has found that although Keane is undoubtedly Ireland's greatest ever player, fans are still divided on the Saipan incident.
