Roy Keane issues Evan Ferguson warning but admits he's delighted for Irish youngster

Roy Keane has warned Republic of Ireland fans not to get too carried away with Evan Ferguson after the teenager scored on his Ireland debut.

But the former Ireland captain admits he was delighted to see the Brighton & Hove Albion striker score against Latvia and says "the prospects are good".

Ferguson scored 17 minutes into his senior Ireland debut in Wednesday night's 3-2 win and is expected to start against France in Monday's huge Euro 2024 qualifier.

Speaking during The Overlap's live show in the 3Arena on Thursday night, Keane said: "It’s great for any young player to get involved in the senior team and score his first goal. Obviously worried that people get carried away. He’s still 18 but the prospects are good."

Keane wasn't overly impressed with Ireland's performance against Latvia after they threw away a two-goal lead, but is excited by the young players coming through under Stephen Kenny.

The Manchester United legend added: "I watched the game last night. Listen, it wasn’t great. Obviously, the tough game is on Monday but it is great to see these young players come through.

"It’s nice to get excited but you’ve got to give the kid a chance to mature. It’s a great start for him. I’m absolutely delighted for him. He seems like a nice kid."
