A mischievous cat named Rowdy is going to be returned to her owner after spending three weeks on the run in a US airport.

The black moggy had dodged airport staff at Boston Logan International Airport after escaping from her cage to chase birds.

Cheeky Rowdy made a run for it when her owner Patty Sahli returned to America after spending 15 years in Germany.

Her escape sparked a massive search to track her down.

"I'm kind of in disbelief," Ms Sahli said.

"I thought, what are the odds we're actually going to get her back? But I got a call this morning and I am just so shocked.

“It was such a community effort. We’re just so grateful to everyone who helped look for her.”

Numberous sightings were made of the moggy during her time on the run in the airport.

A spokesperson for the airport added: “Whether out of fatigue or hunger we’ll never know, but this morning she finally let herself be caught.”

Staff at the airport had been chasing Rowdy since June 24.

In order to catch the tearaway feline, staff placed traps and set up wildlife cameras in order to track the cat down.

The green-eyed cat was given a health check and she is now set to return to her family.
