Rotary club help Lanarkshire supermarket install life-saving defibrillator

A donation from East Kilbride Rotary Club helped staff at a supermarket in the town achieve their goal of installing a life-saving defibrillator in store.

The staff at EK's Kingsgate superstore were determined to raise cash to get the equipment fitted after, sadly, two customers suffered fatal heart attacks.

Rotarians were delighted to hand over a cheque for £750 after hearing of the store's fundraising mission.

A spokesperson for the club said: "Being present when two of their customers sadly suffered fatal heart attacks in store, the staff were determined that this would happen to no-one else and set about raising funds to be able to purchase a defibrillator for the store.

"A request for a donation was made to the Rotary Club and thanks to the generosity of the East Kilbride public who drop money into the Wishing Well in the James Hamilton Heritage Park, the club were able to donate the £750 they needed to complete the purchase.

"Not only were the staff able to purchase the defibrillator, but also a “Little Annie” and other training materials so that the store’s first aiders can be trained in the use of the machine.

"The Rotary Club’s Wishing Well has been a popular feature in the Heritage Park since 2007 and the money collected is used by the club to help local charities and individuals."

Members of East Kilbride Rotary did a bucket collection in EK town centre for Ukraine (EKN)

Mark Taggart, store manager at Sainsbury’s East Kilbride superstore, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to East Kilbride Rotary Club for their generous donation.

"Their contribution, alongside our own store’s fundraising, allowed us to install a defibrillator in our store to help make a difference in the community.

"My team are passionate about helping others, and I’m proud of their efforts to support our customers.”

In other fundraising, EK Rotary Club, like many others, also collected for the Ukraine appeal recently.

They held a bucket collection in the town's Plaza shopping centre.

And thanks to the generosity of the people of East Kilbride, the fantastic sum of £1100 was raised.

The money will go towards the purchase of medical supplies for Ukraine hospitals and will be channelled through a Rotary health professionals charity.

Dr John Philips, chairman of The International Rotary Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals said: "The conditions in frontline countries are desperate.

"They requested some emergency medications and I was delighted to be able to authorise the purchase of these in Austria - ordered through Rotary there.

"The drugs will be transported to the border and handed over to colleagues in Ukraine. This is the magic of Rotary.”

The club would like to thank all who gave so generously.
