Rory McIlroy still in contention after hot finish at Travelers Championship

A late flurry kept Rory McIlroy in contention after what had been a frustrating third round at the Travelers Championship.

The Northern Irishman carded 66 which leaves him in a tie for 16th place for the tournament on 12-under, eight shots behind the current leader Chez Reavie.

Benign conditions lowered the scoring on day three, with Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay all scoring 8-under or better.

But McIlroy couldn’t take advantage of the calm weather and could only make two Birdies on the front nine.

He Birdied the tenth but a sloppy Bogey on the Par-5 13th stifled the Holywood native’s momentum.

McIlroy bounced back with Birdie on 17 before making Par on 18 to leave himself just inside the top-20.

A week on from his US Open heartache, McIlroy’s putting has come back to haunt him again with the World Number three ranked 33rd in the field for strokes gained on the green.

Elsewhere Shane Lowry endured a frustrating round and Parred 13 holes in a row before finally making a Birdie on 18 to get to 8-under for the tournament.
