Rory McIlroy has been praised for an 'honest confession' after he admitted he wanted to Wyndham Clark to three-putt the final hole in the US Open.
McIlroy missed finished just one shot behind winner Clark after his putter misfired on the final day.
And World Number three McIlroy was in the penultimate group and watched Clark play the final hole.
The American had a lengthy putt for birdie on the final hole and lagged it up perfectly to have a tap in par to win the tournament.
And Northern Ireland man McIlroy admitted he wanted to see Clark three-putt the final hole.
He said: "You don't want to wish bad on anyone but you're really hoping for a three-putt."
And the four-time major winner was praised for his honesty.
One social media user said: "An absolutely honest confession.
"Any player in that situation would’ve hoped that player (Clark) would bogey the last hole.
"Clark absolutely earned the victory and I’m certain McIlroy congratulated him."
While another said: "At least he is honest."
And another said: "If it gets to 18 and you need some bogey help, any competitor is rooting against their opponent there. It’s not ill will, just competition."
