Rory McIlroy hangs on after tough day in third day of US Open to trail by three as Seamus Power in touching distance

Rory McIlroy managed to hang tough at the US Open on Saturday in a day where it all could have went wrong for the Hollywood man.

Conditions were tough in Boston and McIlroy squandered his good work from the first two days with three bogeys in his opening six holes.

And McIlroy could not get it going and missed a number of very makeable birdie chances in a round that felt all too familiar for the Northern Ireland man.

But a run of one putts on the back and only one dropped shot saw McIlroy stay at one under par.

And after a shocking drive on 18, McIlroy got a lucky break before hitting a wedge to 20 feet where he just missed a final birdie.

Seamus Power is poised to make a charge at the leaders after an impressive level par 70.

The Waterford man currently sits just outside the top 10 and an eagle on the eight hole was a real highlight.

Power would bogey three times on the back but also hit two birdies and sits at one over par.

The task is not insurmountable for the two Irishmen after there was late drama with leader Jon Rahm who found two bunkers on the final hole.

The Spaniard got stuck in a fairway bunker which took him two attempts to escape before finding himself plugged in a greenside bunker.

Rahm would drop two shots to fall to three under while Matthew Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris sit at four under par, three ahead of McIlroy and five ahead of Power.
