Rory McIlroy explains why he would vote for LIV Golf stars to be welcomed back to DP World Tour

  • Rory McIlroy stated that LIV Golf was "half a good idea, executed poorly" and insisted the breakaway circuit is no longer a threat to the traditional order of the game as players face a one-year PGA Tour suspension if they quit LIV.
  • LIV Golf is attempting to relaunch as LIV 2.0 in 2027 after entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the United States following the withdrawal of its 5 billion US dollars (£3.7bn) backing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
  • The proposed relaunch has received potential backing of 300 million US dollars (£227m) from BC Partners Capital conditional on players re-signing, although major stars including Jon Rahm have already ruled out continuing.
  • LIV 2.0 has suffered a major setback following news that any players signing up for the circuit will be barred from DP World Tour membership and rendered ineligible for the Ryder Cup.
  • Opinions remain divided over whether returning LIV players should be welcomed back, with McIlroy voting in favour for business reasons while six-time DP World Tour winner Joost Luiten insists they should be forced to re-qualify through Q-School.
