Rookie LB Nick Herbig after his first preseason game: ‘I was born to be a Steeler’

One of the most impressive Pittsburgh Steelers players from Friday’s preseason game was rookie outside linebacker Nick Herbig. Herbig got 1.5 sacks on eight pass-rushing snaps against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and well outplayed his pre-draft expectations.

After the game, Herbig was elated after the performance and to be a part of the Steelers.

“I feel like I was born to be a Steeler,” Herbig said. “I’m supposed to be here, wearing that Black and Gold. I feel that Black and Gold running through my veins right now. It feels like exactly what God wanted for me.”

The Steelers picked Herbig in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft. I’ll be the first to admit I wondered if he had the size to hold up in the NFL but so far he has had no issues using his burst and variety of pass-rush moves to win against NFL tackles. He’s probably more of a situational edge rusher in the regular season but his ceiling is very high at this point.
