Ron DeSantis drops out, donors speculate on Nikki Haley's exit

Ron DeSantis dropped out of the race after considering his options.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially dropped out of the Republican presidential race, a decision that comes after careful consideration and discussions with his donors. The move signals a narrowing field in New Hampshire, where Republican voters are now faced with choosing between Donald Trump and Nikki Haley.

DeSantis's decision to withdraw from the race was primarily driven by his campaign's assessment of the path to victory. The Florida governor's team closely examined the polling data and realized that his chances of gaining momentum in South Carolina were slim. With the winner-takes-all nature of the state's primary, it became clear that it would be extremely difficult for DeSantis to secure the necessary delegate count to surpass his rivals. Furthermore, the subsequent proportional states would pose additional challenges, making it increasingly unlikely for him to gain any significant traction.

The timing of DeSantis's withdrawal was influenced by the need for continued donor support and the potential of elected officials switching their allegiance to Trump. It was also crucial to consider the looming Florida legislature session and the mounting pressure from across the country for DeSantis to step aside. The governor's decision ultimately weighed the benefits of continuing the campaign against the growing hurdles he would face.

While specific polling data from South Carolina is not available, it is believed to align with the public polling, and it undoubtedly influenced DeSantis's assessment of his viability in the state. If DeSantis had chosen to remain in the race through South Carolina, it was anticipated that his support, which largely leans towards Trump, would have weakened Nikki Haley's chances in both New Hampshire and South Carolina. However, given Haley's current standing in the polls, it is anticipated that she will also withdraw from the race after the New Hampshire primary.

As a donor for DeSantis, the decision to end the campaign raises questions about how the funds were allocated. However, it should be noted that there were sufficient funds available to continue through the South Carolina primary. The calculation, however, involved considering the diminishing returns of investing heavily in South Carolina, followed by the challenging prospect of securing additional funds for future races.

With DeSantis out of the race, attention turns to the remaining candidates, particularly Donald Trump. One donor firmly pledges their support for Trump as the eventual nominee. Speculating on the upcoming vice presidential pick, the donor proposes Governor Greg Abbott of Texas as an ideal choice. The donor points to Abbott's understanding of border and economic issues, as well as his extensive donor base in Texas, which could help consolidate support and counter any potential no labels candidate.

As the Republican primary continues, DeSantis's departure narrows the field and presents voters with a clearer choice between Trump and Haley. The decision to drop out serves as a reminder of the careful calculations candidates must make in order to navigate the challenging path towards securing the nomination.
