We Brits are a creative brunch with a peculiar sense of humour. Remember Boaty McBoatface?
So it should be no surprise that we have all sorts of inventive names for everyday objects. Some vary from region to region (think bread roll, cob, bun, barm cake), whereas others are more uniform, albeit unrecognisable from their international counterparts (i.e. UK chips vs US crisps).
But one term we may never agree on is the correct name for 'TV remote'. Keen to discover the range of unusual nicknames for the humble household item, radio presenter Roman Kemp asked his followers to share their answers, and it turns out there are quite a few.
The hotly-debated question was raised by the radio host on Twitter, where he revealed he has his own particular favourite.
"Genuine question. What do you call your TV Remote? Mines always been the oofa doofa," wrote Roman.
His tweet garnered over 600,000 views and a range of responses. One person replied: "Mote-control." A second said: "The flicker." "Ours is just the mote," revealed a third.
Someone else put: "The buttons." Another answered: "Thingy." And a different commenter suggested: "Dave."
One responder boldly claimed: "Genuine answer. Roasted cheese." But a disbelieving reader thought: "It's called a Sky remote, irrespective of if you even have Sky anymore."
Elsewhere, viewers were shocked to learn the remote could be called anything other than a remote.
"I'm a Brummie and we call it the TV Remote, anything else isn't acceptable," read such a reply. Someone quipped: "Just call it the remote because I'm normal." A third person chimed in: "I call it the remote because I'm not 7 years old."
And last but not least, one commenter answered: "Someone close to me calls it a mote recontrol and this continues to annoy me 25+ years on. They'll def see this and I'm glad."
