Roman Abramovich reveals to Chelsea fans why he saved the club from unfortunate Ken Bates issue

It’s the end of an era for Chelsea fans worldwide. Roman Abramovich will be selling the club, and whilst nobody is certain as to when and who, the time is closer than we would have ever expected.

Following his statement released by the club, there was something quite respectable from the billionaire. The statement as a whole showed just how much he cares for the club, from the players to each individual staff member. That is why he is doing this. To protect the interest of the club.

Decades have passed where buyers attempted to take the fortress off his hands, but it was never about the money for him.

Abramovich left the blues with a message to remember as per the official Chelsea website. A part that stood out to me is as follows, “The sale of the Club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process. I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and Club.”

In 2003, Abramovich saved Chelsea from a potential financial crisis. The £140 million takeover released the then-owner, Ken Bates, from the financial pressure surrounding him. Considering that he was looking into buying a football club at the time, there was a plethora to choose from. Including clubs with rich histories, such as Manchester United. Could you imagine if he had decided to take over one of the most well-established football clubs in England? Chelsea could have ended up in administration in the end.

It was never about the money returns for the Chelsea owner, and he has proved this with his actions. Not only has he pumped almost £2 billion of his own money into the business. He has also stated that he will not be asking for this loan to be paid back. You would think a billionaire would want to see his money made back, but he insists on forgoing the debt.

He gave the fans a lifeline to keep supporting a club they loved and built an empire out of a sheer passion for football and hunger for success.

His money, sweat, and tears have been put into the club, and that’s why it’s with a heavy heart that we have to see him leave. Of course, the reasoning is justified, and there is no arguing whether or not he is making the right decision. However, it is still a shock to the system. A positive that comes from this is that he is going about things in the right way. This entire ordeal could have left and landed many club members in a serious state of uncertainty.

Abramovich has given more than just money to the club in his time. He’s given us memories, hope, and success. For that, he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest football club owners to grace the sport. There’s no one quite like him, willing to give up billions not just to satisfy buyers.

He has “instructed” that all net proceeds from the sale will be donated for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.
