Rod Stewart in Rangers reality reminder but radio rental fan demands heads roll after Liverpool mauling

Celebrity Celtic fan Rod Stewart expressed his sympathy for Rangers after their Liverpool mauling as Simon Jordan tried to put a bit of perspective on the Champions League Ibrox annihilation.

But that didn’t wash for one livid Light Blues punter who phoned into Jim White and Jordan’s talkSPORT show and demanded heads roll at Rangers over the 7-1 obliteration by Jurgen Klopp’s rampant Reds. Hot Rod was at Parkhead to see his own side defeated 2-0 by RB Leipzig to end the Hoops hopes of progressing in UEFA’s premier competition.

And White read out a message from rock legend Stewart saying: “I’ve said a million times Scottish teams are always going to be punching above their weight and that in reality we’re probably all better off in the Europa League.” The show host then said to sidekick Jordan: “Rod’s looking at it for what it is,” but the former Crystal Palace chairman said: “You can’t not be in the Champions League if you win the league. And it’s about getting the benefit of the finances and build and build build until they can compete properly. Rangers loss for the last year was £27million after selling players so they’re losing money - it’s not a profitable business.

“It’s not as if they have this embarrassment of riches. The gap has got wider. The bottom team in the Premier League, Burnley or whoever it is, will get 25 times the amount of money Celtic or Rangers will get for winning the league. There is the nature of the disparity. Once upon a time Scottish football had a different lure.”

However, that didn’t appease one Gers fan who called in to say: “I was one of, probably the majority of Rangers fans last night, calling for the Rangers manager to be sacked or resign. We’ve been thrashed in every game in the Champions League and Celtic twice in the last year. His time is up. He doesn’t have a Plan B and I hate to say it but Steven Gerrard is a better manager.

“He hasn’t been fully backed and Douglas Park and Stewart Robertson need to come out. The statement that less money was made from the Champions League than had been claimed was absolute nonsense. Stewart Robertson should resign and if Douglas Park doesn’t have the funds then he should sell up.”
