Rod Stewart and Elvis Costello in Platinum Jubilee row over Scottish legend's performance

Rod Stewart has taken aim at Elvis Costello online, over comments the singer made about his recent performance for the Queen's Jubilee.

Sir Rod was one of the star attractions at the Platinum Party at the Palace on Saturday, June 4 as a whole host of big names took to a stage in front of Buckingham Palace to honour Queen Elizabeth's II seven decades on the throne. Others stars on the bill included Diana Ross, Alicia Keys and Sam Ryder and Rod raised a few eyebrows by singing a cover of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline over one of his own songs.

Rod claimed to the audience that the BBC 'made' him sing the classic track, and a number of people had a few things to say about the performance, given Rod, who also sang Baby Jane, ad plenty more of his own songs to sing. Among those who criticised the act was Elvis, currently on tour across the UK.

According to The Mirror, Elvis apparently told fans at a gig in Glasgow: "...the show was good, wasn’t it? Wasn’t it? No, it was s***e. mean, I know you all love him and he’s one of yours and everything, but Rod. What the f***?’

He reportedly continued: ‘I must say, listen we all have bad nights vocally, but for f*** sake, Sweet f***ing Caroline. "

Elvis has since attempted to clarify his comments, describing the reports as "s**te," saying he was " joking about the many uncomfortable choices that were overlooked," and that Rod should have sang You Wear It Well, a cut from his own back catalogue.

However, Sir Rod hasn't taken the comments lying down and, on Sunday evening, took to Twitter to retaliate, writing: "Dear Elvis. yes my voice was rough cos of Covid. I apologise , I though it better it to make an appearance rather than let everyone down so sorry By the way where’s your hair gone mate ????? Sir Rod."

One of the Scottish legend's fans, swiftly replied: "you never just make an appearance. Your talent and showmanship are always 100%"
