Rod Stewart, Alison Hammond and Joe Lycett nominated for British LGBT Awards

Sir Rod Stewart, comedian Joe Lycett and Alison Hammond are just some of the nominations up for a gong at this year's British LGBT Awards.

The ceremony will honour leading LGBT+ activists, allies and celebrities, with the likes of Elton John, Kylie Minogue and Little Mix previously winning accolades.

It comes after Sir Rod, who is up for a celebrity ally award, openly spoke out about Qatar's human rights during last year's World Cup in a country where homosexuality is illegal. He also claimed he previouslt turned down a $1million offer to play there, saying "it's not right to go".

Joe Lycett also made headlines when he posted a video on Twitter urging David Beckham to pull out of his £10m ambassadorial deal with the host nation and threatened to shred £10,000 if he didn't.

Joe filmed himself destroying bank notes when he got no response from Becks, but he later revealed they were fake and instead donated the real cash to an LGBT charity. His stunt has him shortlisted for media moment of the year.

Hammond, like Sir Rod is up for celebrity ally. While Harry Styles, RuPaul and Sue Perkins are also up for gongs for the 2023 awards, which will take place in June.

Awards founder Sarah Garrett, said: "It is more important than ever that we shine a light on those who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGBT+ community, during what has been another very challenging 12 months for the community.

"The nominees, which include an exciting mix of famous LGBT+ faces, allies and organisations, have all demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights."
