After parting ways with head coach Stephen Silas on Sunday, the Rockets are set to begin their coaching search.
According to The Athletic, Houston is expected to consider Raptors coach Nick Nurse, Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, former Lakers coach Frank Vogel, former Celtics coach Ime Udoka, former Hornets coach James Borrego and Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin. The team is reportedly expected to have a list of eight candidates for the job.
Nurse hasn’t announced his plans for after the season, saying last week that he is going to evaluate his future once the Raptors’ season wraps. Atkinson was the Nets’ head coach 2016 to ’20 and has been working as a Warriors assistant for the last two seasons. Griffin has never worked as a head coach and has been an assistant with the Raptors since ’18.
Ex-Celtics coach Udoka was suspended by the organization ahead of the 2022–23 season after it was reported he had an “improper” consensual relationship with a female member of the team’s staff. He was reportedly considered for the Nets coaching role, but ultimately wasn’t chosen.
Vogel and the Lakers parted ways last April after the team didn’t reach the 2022 postseason. He worked in Los Angeles for three seasons and won the ’20 NBA Finals.
Borrego was fired last April after four seasons with the Hornets. The team didn’t reach the playoffs during his entire tenure.
