Roblox’s iconic ‘oof’ sound is gone, and fans are losing it

Anyone who’s sunk time into Roblox is familiar with the silly “oof” sound effect that plays whenever someone dies. For fans, it’s the stuff of legend — which is why they’re upset that it’s gone.

On Tuesday, Roblox Corporation removed “oof” from the game. That sound effect is actually from Messiah, an old first-person shooter whose creator, Tommy Tallarico, was never compensated for its use in Roblox. While everyone thought Roblox Corporation and Tallarico came to some licensing agreement in 2020, something clearly went south.

“Due to a licensing issue, we have removed the ‘oof’ sound from Roblox,” Roblox Corporation said on Twitter. “[We] have created a replacement default sound which launches today.”

As a result, Roblox fans are going through it. Most of them utterly detest the decision, venting frustration on social media. Check out some of the absolutely hilarious reactions below.
