Jack Robinson has extended his lead at the top of the World Surf League rankings despite falling in the Portugal Pro final to Brazilian Joao Chianca.
The West Australian went down in a high quality final in the Rip Curl Pro at Supertubos, with his two-wave score of 15.14 topped by Chianca's 17.57.
Collecting his first tour win, the 22-year-old Brazilian was never really headed and posted back-to-back scores of 8.50 and 9.07 with barrels aplenty at the Peniche break.
Despite the loss Robinson was happy with his consistency.
"I've got a lot of gratitude right now and I'm just super grateful to be here in Portugal," Robinson said.
"I had a good event. I'm just going to try to keep the journey and the momentum going, it's just step by step for me and I'm just super happy."
Teenager Caitlin Simmers won the women's event in an all-Californian final against Courtney Conlogue.
Australian Molly Picklum hung on to the women's rankings lead despite bowing out in a tight quarter-final against defending Portugal champion Tatiana Weston-Webb.
In an action-packed day, Macy Callaghan was Australia's best performer in the women's draw - reaching the semi-finals before she was eliminated by 17-year-old Simmers, who is also in her first year on the top tour.
On the men's side Callum Robson, who scored a perfect 10 earlier in the event, also made the final four before the Australian was taken out by Chianca.
