Roberto Martinez makes Arsenal and Mikel Arteta manager point amid Steven Gerrard sacking

Steven Gerrard became the fourth Premier League manager to be sacked this season following Aston Villa's 3-0 defeat at Fulham. His sacking brings an end to a miserable 11-month spell in charge of the Midlands club, who have won just seven league games in 2022.

It was only last week that Arsenal legend Paul Merson called on Villa to give Gerrard more time, in a similar manner to what the Gunners did with Mikel Arteta. However, Gerrard has followed Scott Parker, Thomas Tuchel and Bruno Lage out of the Premier League exit door.

Now that the Gunners are in a fantastic position in the league - top of the table with nine wins from 10 - it's easy to forget the pressure Arteta has been under at different points during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta's lowest point as Gunners boss was when his side lost their first three games of last season, which left them rooted to the bottom of the table heading into the first international break of the campaign. However, it was refreshing to see the Gunners not pull the trigger, and the Arsenal board are now being rewarded for their patience and faith in Arteta.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez believes Arsenal are leading a culture change when it comes to giving managers time. "I look back when I came to the British game back in 1995, it was very difficult to see a manager losing his job just by three defeats, and I loved that," Martinez told Amazon Prime.

"We have gone away from that since everything has been in the media, it is a change of culture. In Arsenal’s case, we are going back to that. If a coach is good enough, let him work. It is a real strength as a football club to go through adversity and show some trust in the manager."
