Roberto Martinez issues blunt response to Belgium future question after World Cup exit

Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez refused to comment on his future as Belgium manager after his side were dumped out of the World Cup.

Belgium, who are ranked second in the world and who finished third at the World Cup in Russia in 2018, played out a 0-0 draw with Croatia at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, after knowing a win would have taken them through to the knockout stages.

As well as throwing Martinez's prospects of staying on as Belgium boss into doubt, it means that Amadou Onana will be reunited with the Everton squad earlier than expected as preparations begin for the restart of the Premier League.

Onana was suspended for the clash with Croatia, who qualify in second in Group F along with winners Morocco, having picked up bookings in both of Belgium's first two matches in Qatar.

Former Everton striker Romelu Lukaku started on the bench for Martinez's side after struggling for fitness all season with Inter Milan, but was introduced for the start of the second half.

Lukaku had huge opportunities to send the Red Devils into the last 16 but failed to convert on the biggest stage of them all.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Martinez said when asked about staying on as Belgium manager: "Now is not the moment."

About the Red Devils' early exit from the competition, Martinez admitted it wasn't good enough: "Clearly. We wanted to get through, I’m sure the other national teams wanted to get through, too. You're in the best tournament in the world, in the last one we won three group games, in the Euros we won three games and it wasn’t enough to go all the way, we wanted to go all the way, we didn’t get out of the group stage and for me, it’s the same feeling.

"If you don’t go until the end, it’s trying to fight to get there, today is a way to lose that you can accept."

Martinez, who was linked with a return to Everton before Frank Lampard was appointed as the club's manager in January, will see his contract with Belgium run out after the World Cup.
