The rest is money
Spare a thought for ITV Political Editor Robert Peston. In a recent episode of his finance podcast, The Rest is Money, he warned of a spoof online story featuring him that encouraged people to put cash into dubious investment schemes.
“We complain to Facebook, we complain to Twitter and nothing happens, it just keeps popping up,” he lamented to co-presenter Steph McGovern. “I know vulnerable people who have handed money over as a result of this...I think that’s a grotesque failure.”
Quite right – Peston would never tell his listeners to put their hard-earned cash at risk.
In unrelated news, his podcast has signed a new sponsor, crypto firm Kraken. Its ads on the show say those who put money with them shouldn’t do so “unless you’re prepared to lose all the money you invest. This is a high-risk investment, and you should not expect to be protected if something goes wrong.”
Under podcast owner Goalhanger’s business model, presenters are not given a salary but instead take a cut of the ad revenue.
So Peston can only protect listeners up to a point. The rest, as they say, is money.
