Robbie Ure is confident that his strike partnership with Oliver McBurnie can get goals for Scotland after the pair drew a blank in the goalless draw with Slovenia.
Sevilla striker Ure impressed on his debut for the national side, and clipped the outside of the post with an effort from range at the end of the first half.
McBurnie had a couple of clear opportunities as Scotland took control of the encounter during the second period, but they just couldn’t find a way past Jan Oblak in the Slovenian goal.
Ure is confident though that with a little patience and more chances to play together, the pair can be a prolific partnership for Scotland.
“I really enjoyed playing with him,” Ure said.
“These things come with time, and we did a lot in training in the past week to try and get that relationship going as quickly as possible.
“I thought Oli did really, really well dropping in to get the ball. It’s just about doing opposite movements to create space for each other. Hopefully the more games we play, the better the relationship will get.
“I think we have a good relationship off the pitch as well. I feel we complement each other quite well. Listen, we’ll see.
“I really enjoyed it. In the first half we suffered at times but we stuck together well and changed one or two things at the break. In the second half, I think we controlled the game. We created a lot of good chances and probably should have won it in the end. For me personally, I’m really happy. I enjoyed it and I’m hungry for more.
“If my shot hit the inside of the post in the first half it’s probably a goal. But the keeper covered it well. Maybe on another day, I could have gone across the goal. I was unlucky with it.
“With the number of chances we created, it gives us a lot of belief going into the next few games, for sure. We’ve got quality players all around the pitch so we’re always confident that we’ll make chances.
“When we get them, we need to start taking them. Hopefully that will change on Tuesday.”
It has been a whirlwind few weeks for Ure with his move to Sevilla and now his Scotland debut, but after playing 90 minutes against Barcelona last weekend, he wasn’t fazed by making the step into the international arena.
“In the last month I have played against World Cup winning centre-backs,” he said.
“So, I was just trying to take confidence from those experiences.
“I think I did okay. I would like to try and do better if I am given the opportunity to play again. But it’s only my debut and I need to understand these things take time when I’m playing with 10 different players.”
Ure is now hoping that he gets to sample the Hampden Park atmosphere as a Scotland player on Tuesday evening when Switzerland come to Glasgow, and his family are helping to swell the attendance.
“Unfortunately my family couldn’t get to the game [in Slovenia],” he said.
“But I have around 30 coming to Hampden for the game on Tuesday! I’m excited to see them.
“You could maybe say it’ll be better opposition on Tuesday but we’ll playing at home in front in an amazing crowd. We’ll take confidence from that as well.
“If we can play on the front foot, like we did in the second half of this game against Slovenia, then we can hopefully have an enjoyable night.
“I’m confident if we keep creating those chances, we’ll take them. It’s part of football, missed chances. A lot of it can be mental as well, when you’re tired.
“But we’re all confident and hopefully with the next opportunity we get, we’ll take it.”
