Robbie Hamilton's Hibs loan exit explained as Steve Kean details 'natural next step' after new deal

Hibs academy director Steve Kean has explained the reasons behind Robbie Hamilton's loan switch to Stirling Albion with the youngster handed a new deal in the capital.

The 18-year-old has shone for the development team in the heart of the midfield this season and was a standout in the memorable UEFA Youth League run that ended in a heartbreaking defeat to German outfit Borussia Dortmund. The youngster's form has been rewarded with fresh terms until summer 2024 and he will now go and experience first-team football in League Two.

The Hibees starlet, the son of former footballer Jim Hamilton, has trained regularly with the first-team and was handed a debut last season as a 17-year-old against St Johnstone but he will now join promotion chasing Stirling Albion in their quest to reach the third tier. They are seven points behind Dumbarton, but have two games in hand over the league leaders. As part of his deal, he will be able to play and train with the development team while turning out for Darren Young's side and training alongside them.

Explaining the thought process behind the new contract and loan, Kean told Hibs' official website: “This was the natural next step for Robbie, who has excelled with us over the last couple of years.

“Robbie is a really talented young player that’s a good character, that reads the game well, and is tidy in possession.

“This loan move will be an excellent test for him as it will provide him with regular exposure to senior men’s football. Not only will he be able to express himself, but it’ll also test, and most importantly develop different areas of his game.

“We will also continue to work with him on his personal development plan, so we can constantly monitor his progression.”
