Robbie Davies Jr set for surgery after suffering sickening ankle injury against Darragh Foley

Robbie Davies Jr has revealed he will need to undergo surgery for the ankle injury he suffered in his loss to Darragh Foley.

The Liverpool boxer had his ankle twisted under him in his clash with Foley at the M&S Bank Arena on Saturday night. Davies Jr, who entered the ring to You'll Never Walk Alone, made a sharp start to the fight, landing a good right hand and taking the first round on the cards.

However, with 10 seconds of the second round left, Foley caught Davies Jr with a huge right-hook that dropped the 33-year-old to the canvas. Davies Jr, to his credit, rose to his feet before the end of the 10 count and then headed back to his corner as the bell sounded to signal the end of the round.

But what happened next stunned those in attendance at the M&S Bank Arena into silence as the fight was instantly waved off by referee Marcus McDonnell. As the big Liverpool fan went to move out of the way of a Foley right-hook, his ankle twisted underneath the weight of his body and ended up pointing in the wrong direction.

Davies Jr had to be carried back to his dressing room and he then headed to Aintree hospital where his worst fears were confirmed.

“Thank you for all the messages and well wishes, I left Aintree Hospital early hours this morning with a cast on my leg,” he wrote on social media on Sunday afternoon.

“A second opinion on my X-ray this morning has got me back to the hospital now where I will undergo an operation. Rotten luck with a freak accident. I will update everyone in due course. Again thank you everyone.”

Foley, who has now won his last five fights, jumped on the ropes to celebrate his victory, but the move was something he later regretted.

“Looking back at the replay, I look like a t*** jumping up and down when the man has injured himself,” he said. “But I needed to win this fight. There was no way I was leaving that ring a loser.”

Speaking on the injury, Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn said: “Robbie Davies, I would have loved to have seen that fight progress after the knockdown in the second round.

“It was an absolutely sickening injury, basically his leg just snapped, his ankle just snapped. It is the kind of injury you see in football matches.”
