A dozy armed robber who used a fold-up walking stick to pretend he had a gun when sticking up a string of bookies was caught after he gave his real name to a train ticket inspector on his way to a heist. Brett Mullan, 50, used trains to travel to the five robberies he committed around south London, where he made off with nearly £3,000.
The hapless crook used a collapsible stick hidden in a carrier bag to make betting shop workers think he had a firearm. He used the imitation weapon to demand a total of £2,780 from the raids in Lee and Crayford in south east London, as well as Sutton and Norwood in south west London during his crime spree over April this year.
CCTV showed Mullan wearing a face mask, sunglasses and a hat while brandishing the fake shotgun and pointing it at shop workers under security glass. But Mullan slipped up when he was stopped by a train guard travelling to his second robbery in Lee and gave his real name.
