'Robbed' Man City fans react as Phil Foden denied by VAR after Erling Haaland foul vs Liverpool

Manchester City looked to have taken the lead in the 54th minute at Anfield against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, with Phil Foden pouncing when the ball spilled loose after Erling Haaland was denied by Allison.

However, the Stockport-born winger was denied by VAR, with the officials deeming that Haaland had committed a foul on Fabinho in the build-up before he made his way into the box. The decision sparked fury from Pep Guardiola with City denied just minutes after Ederson had pulled off a world-class save to keep the scores level before Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead in the 76th minute.

It came at a crucial time in the match and saw the atmosphere at Anfield turned up a notch, with both benches reacting passionately to the decision. City fans may feel aggrieved with Fabinho looking like he was already falling, but Haaland's grip on the shirt of the Brazilian did not help City's cause.

In commentary for Sky Sports, Gary Neville agreed with the decision, saying: Pep’s going mad, whatever happens coming out of this, I imagine it’s going to be cancelled will mean this atmosphere will be electric and turned up. There’s that tug on the shirt from Haaland on Fabinho there, that’s why the goals going to be disallowed.

"He’s been here before, it’s just the tug of the shirt his right hand. I have to say he holds on for too long to pull Fabinho down. I think it’s the right decision."

Fans on Twitter were more divided, however, and with the controversy surrounding VAR decisions in the Premier League took to social media to vent their frustrations.
