I’ve always been obsessed by what’s happening in our national conversation (and not only because I want to know what people are saying about me). What with chatting on London’s streets and taking calls on my radio show and the bajillions of hours I spend on social media, I think I’ve got a pretty good feel for what Britain’s talking about most days.
Recently, though, it seems that far from being a real discussion, we’re slowly descending into an endless national argument. In fact, it sometimes feels like our attention is being actively directed towards the angriest topics around. I’m obviously not the first to notice, but nowadays all people ever want to do is clash in the narrowest trenches of the so-called “culture wars”.
