Rob Reiner tried to help his son, but now Nick Reiner is his father and mother’s suspected killer

Hollywood is in shock today as details emerge of the deaths of famed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. On Sunday at about 3:30 pm, the Los Angeles Fire Department was called to a Los Angeles home to provide urgent medical aid. On arriving, they found the bodies of a man and woman, with their identities soon confirmed as the Reiners.

No matter the circumstances of their deaths, this would be a tragedy. But horror and bewilderment quickly set in as suspicions centered on their 32-year-old son Nick Reiner, who is currently in custody and being questioned.

No formal charges have been filed, and while it doesn’t appear Nick is currently under arrest, multiple outlets are confirming that he’s the only suspect and cops aren’t searching for anyone else in connection with the murders.

The movie they made together

Rob Reiner – responsible for directing a string of classics like The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, A Few Good Men, Stand By Me, and This is Spinal Tap – also directed 2015’s Being Charlie. This extremely personal movie was made in collaboration with Nick and is based on his experiences dealing with heroin addiction and homelessness.

Rob and Nick Reiner conducted interviews together around the time of the movie’s release, with Rob clearly hoping that making the movie would help him understand what his son went through, show him how to be a good father, and give his son a stable platform on which to rebuild his life.

We don’t currently know what happened to Nick Reiner in the decade since Being Charlie was released, but the nightmarish events of yesterday certainly indicate he remained a deeply troubled individual.

Hopefully, LAPD detectives can discover exactly what happened inside the Reiner home yesterday, and we expect a press conference at some point this morning. But, for now, all we can do is mourn the tragic and untimely death of one of the best comedy directors Hollywood had to offer.
