Wales manager Rob Page believes Daniel James has ‘evolved’ since his move to Leeds United but does not see him as a centre forward. James has often been the man tasked with filling in for first choice number nine Patrick Bamford, who has endured a torrid season due to a string of injury problems.
James, who was signed as a direct replacement in the squad for the outgoing Helder Costa, was seen as the most adequate stand in for Bamford by former boss Marcelo Bielsa due to his relentless pressing ability. The 24-year-old has performed admirably out of position, though has struggled to find the back of the net on a regular basis.
Page has used James in a front two for his country on several occasions during the World Cup qualification campaign, however he has always been partnered with either Kieffer Moore or Gareth Bale. He thinks that while James’ best position is not naturally down the middle, he is still able to offer a huge amount to his team due to his pace and ability to create chances.

Via HITC, he said: “Dan is not an out and out striker. He’s evolved over the last few months. He’s gone from playing wide left to a centre-forward. But he’s a talented footballer with unbelievable pace. He can score goals and he’s creating chances. When centre-forwards are not creating chances that’s the time to worry. The goals will come. He was brilliant against Austria and what he does for the team is unbelievable.”
James could be once again tasked with leading the line this evening as Wales face Czech Republic in a friendly. With no recognised striker in the squad and reports of Bale being rested due to a tight groin, Page could be left with no choice but to line up with the Leeds man down the middle.
