Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney thinks that Paul Mullin could follow in the foosteps of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by enjoying massive popularity in the United States.
The National League side have seen quite the transformation in recent years, going from a relatively small club in Wales to a Hollywood-backed team. Movie stars Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney bought the club back in 2021, and they've been household names ever since.
'Welcome to Wrexham' has been streaming on Disney Plus, while the pair are constantly promoting the club to their millions of followers. Mullin is by far their star striker, and McElhenney is backing him to be as popular as Ronaldo and Messi over in the States,
"Paul Mullin is gonna make himself one of the most popular footballers in the United States," McElhenney tweeted. American soccer continues to grow in popularity, but Messi and Ronaldo remain the popular players due to their immense talent.
Messi and Ronaldo have even been linked with a move to MLS in recent years, which is keeping fans increasingly excited. But Wrexham have received a cult following from fans over in America, and with Mullin being the main man, he's adored.
"SUPER PAUL MULLIN! I know more players on Wrexham than my own MLS team," one fan tweeted. "Now you gotta get some merch in stock so we can wear his gear," another replied to McElhenney.
"You ain't lying, I actually watched the entire second half of the match this morning when Mullin got his hat trick," one fan claimed. "First time I've watched any kind of soccer. Congrats on the win."
Mullin is adored by all sorts of new fans, but also by Reynolds and McElhenney. Mullin is just a lad from Merseyside, but after signing for Wrexham he's fallen into a very different life than what he was used to.
The striker moved down a division to sign for Wrexham, and said that the whole journey has been 'bizarre' ever since. "It's quite bizarre, it's something you don't expect to be on a documentary that is going to be shown all over America," Mullin said.
"Nothing really fazes me. I sort of just get on with my life and get on with the day to day and see what happens. Something different happens every day and I sort of just embrace everything, nothing really gets to me. I just roll with the punches, that sort of thing.
"My family wants me to be happy and excited and I couldn't be more happy being here. I'm really enjoying my football and I'm pretty sure that's showing on the pitch the way I am always trying to smile, things like that."
