Rob McElhenney asks Gareth Bale to play golf, come out of retirement and join Wrexham

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has seemingly made an audacious attempt to convince Gareth Bale to come out of retirement and join the Red Dragons as part of their assault on League Two next season.

After 15 years away, Wrexham sealed their return to the EFL with a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood at the Racecourse on Saturday night, sparking wild celebrations on the pitch and across the town.

Some have already tipped Wrexham to challenge for promotion again in the fourth tier next season, and their rise has been followed keenly by fans from around the world, due in no small part to the hit docuseries Welcome to Wrexham.

It seems Bale is one of those to have been paying attention, with the Wales legend filmed offering his congratulations to the new National League champions.

In a video posted by McElhenny on social media, Bale says: "Hi Rob. Just want to congratulate you for your promotion and everything you're doing at Wrexham."

Accompanying the video, McElhenney wrote: "Hey @GarethBale11 let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season."

It's a message that's clearly been made with tongue-firmly-in-cheek, but Bale isn't the only former Wales hero to have seen his name mentioned in the same breath as the project under McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Euro 2016 hero Hal Robson-Kanu has twice openly said he'd be interested in coming out of retirement to make the move.

Hours after Wrexham's promotion was confirmed, the former West Bromwich Albion man said: "Look Wrexham have done phenomenally well and massive credit to Ryan Reynolds and the whole team down there.

"From my perspective, being able to offer my services to the club, I'm in unique position, which is quite nice. I'm a free agent and I have been for the last two years.

"I've not officially announced my retirement, but again I'm 33 years of age. What they've done is fantastic. I'm happy to have a conversation and as I said, I'd be happy donate any salary I receive to charity as well."
