Rob Green reveals what Leeds United players think about Marcelo Bielsa’s possible Everton appointment

Leeds United players do not believe Marcelo Bielsa is a good fit for Everton right now. That is according to Rob Green, the ex-Whites goalkeeper still in contact with several former teammates.

The Argentine manager maintains iconic status at Elland Road for guiding Leeds back to the Premier League after a 16-year exile. Supporters were torn about whether to sack him following a poor run of form last year.

Despite his departure, Bielsa enjoys an unbreakable bond with the United faithful and has been out of management ever since. However, the 67-year-old is in London to discuss taking the vacant Everton job.

Frank Lampard was sacked after the Toffees' 2-0 defeat to West Ham United last weekend. The club are the top flight’s out-of-form side, sitting two points adrift from safety.

Everton’s 69-year reign in the top tier of English football is in severe danger of coming to a catastrophic end. Critics view a potential Bielsa appointment as risky due to his gung-ho style of play and eccentric personality.

Speaking to the BBC, Green let slip that current Leeds players do not consider him the right man to take charge at Goodison Park. He said: “Yes (whether Bielsa’s reputation is legitimate). They were a special group of players he took over (at Leeds) and he knew that.

“What was key was they would buy into his ethos… and it is a full-on ethos. You cannot eat, sleep, drink, or anything without his say-so, and you're looking at players who, at Everton, are halfway through a season. With a new manager coming in, and this has been echoed by the players who played under Bielsa at Leeds that I spoke to, they're saying ‘not now’.

“Do not bring Bielsa in now because it could destroy you. It is a great fit for Everton as a club. The history they have, the local underdog mentality, the size of the club, the way it's been run, the way they need that galvanising spirit… He can bring that - just not now. Because it can go very well long-term or very wrong, very quickly. And they need a quick fix right now.”
