Rob Burrow's special day is one packed with emotion which Leeds will never forget

Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield have always been loved by the city of Leeds but their legend was further cemented on Sunday.

You'd have needed a heart of stone to hold back the tears as the best friends crossed the finishing line together. As they approached, Kevin stopped, and in an emotionally poignant moment we'll undoubtedly see again and again in years to come, carrying Rob over the line. It was certainly a 'I was there' moment.

They led a staggering 15,000 people, along the course, who all came together as one for the first Rob Burrow Marathon. The sun glistened over the streets of Headingley as thousands showed their support and adulation for the rugby heroes and the runners inspired to follow their example.

Leeds Rhinos great Rob was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2019 and, as all know, has worked tirelessly alongside wife Lindsey Burrow, friends and family to increase awareness of the condition. His efforts inspired friend and former Rhinos teammate Kevin Sinfield to raise millions of pounds for MND-related causes by tackling a series of endurance challenges. In total, Kevin has raised a staggering £7m.

The pair, who saw the Rhinos through many battles at Headingley Stadium down the years, joined forces once again, for Sunday’s special milestone event. Those who took part, cheered on the streets or volunteered, to ensure the smooth running of the festivities, will attest to just how touching and deeply moving the day was. The tears flowed further seeing Lindsey cross the line a little after her husband, sharing a loving embrace with Rob and their children after completing the marathon.

The event has raised money for a string of good causes, including the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and a Leeds Hospitals Charity appeal to build a Rob Burrow Centre for MND.

Those involved from Rob, Kevin and Lindsey through to those dressed as Elmo, Bananaman and Minions should be incredibly proud of themselves. The day was something truly awe-inspiring and it will forever live in the memory.

Leeds has always had an endearing spirit, loyalty and a determination to do right by their own. There was no doubting the people power displayed on Sunday. Leeds loves Rob Burrow and they’ll never let him forget it.
