A man has died after being hit by a road train on a remote highway in the Northern Territory.
Police received reports late on Thursday evening that a man had been hit by a truck on the Stuart Highway, almost 4kms south of the Mataranka cemetery.
The man was declared dead at the scene and has not been formally identified.
The driver allegedly did not stop after the crash but later called police to notify them.
He tested negative for alcohol and has undergone drug testing.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said detectives are still trying to work out what happened.
"The investigation is in the early stages and we would like to speak with anyone who saw any pedestrians or parked vehicles on the Stuart Highway south of Mataranka last night," he said.
