Road disruptions in Rutherglen as 'essential improvements' set to get underway

Rutherglen residents have been warned to expect delays, with roadworks lasting almost a fortnight set to get underway next week.

Locals will see disruption from July 19 through until the end of the month as improvements are made to Glasgow Road.

The work will be carried out from its crossroads with Main Street/Mill Street/Burnhill Street to Shawfield Stadium, beginning next Tuesday, and split into three phases.

Signed diversion routes will be in place through each phasing of the works, and South Lanarkshire Council confirmed the road closures were "essential".

Councillor Robert Brown, chair of the council’s community and enterprise resources, said: "These essential improvements being carried out on key roads in Rutherglen will improve the travel experience for users.”

"The work is being done during the quieter holiday period to minimise inconvenience but the road closures are inevitably disruptive and we hope people will understand.

"The council is making every effort to accommodate local businesses and residents and we are grateful for the co-operation of everyone concerned.

"We ask that all road users allow additional time for any journeys which involve the use of the A730 Glasgow Road throughout the phased work.

"We apologise for any inconvenience but are sure that road users will benefit from these essential improvement works once they have been completed."

The full details of the works will see the resurfacing of Burnhill Street from Cathcart Road to two thirds of junction of Glasgow Road / Mill Street, Rutherglen, from July 19 until July 21.

This will involve the closure of Burnhill Street in both directions with three-way set of lights and contraflow on Glasgow Road / Mill Street to allow traffic to flow in both directions on Glasgow Road, Mill Street and Main Street.

On July 24, the work will move towards resurfacing the remaining one third of junction of Glasgow Road/Mill Street. Main Street will be closed in both directions, with three-way set of lights and contraflow on Glasgow Road / Mill Street allowing traffic to flow in both directions on Glasgow Road, Mill Street and Burnhill Street.

Lastly, from July 25 until July 31, there will be resurfacing of Glasgow Road (northbound only) from Main Street to Shawfield Stadium.

As a result Glasgow Road will be closed northbound only and traffic will flow in both directions on Burnhill Street, Mill Street and Main Street. Glasgow Road will be southbound only during those days.
