Republicans have good reason to fear the November midterms. Current projections have Democrats comfortably taking the House, with the Senate also very much in play. As GOP strategist Alex Patton admitted over the summer: “In private, when the microphones are off, most read the tea leaves and whisper, ‘It’s going to be a bad night.’”
As such, the convention was full of big promises and bluster, like Donald Trump promising $5,000 for every American adult in the event of Republican victories, his promise that the war with Iran will end “immediately” after a Republican victory, and a plea to voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot.”
