Riverdance star Michael Flatley pays tribute to late musician Seamus Tansey

Michael Flatley has paid tribute to legendary flutist Seamus Tansey, who died during the weekend.

Mr Tansey was a renowned flute player from Gurteen, Co Sligo, known all over Ireland and beyond.

Paying tribute on social media, Riverdance legend Michael described the late talented musician as a “great friend and mentor”.

He said: “My great friend and mentor Seamus Tansey, one of the greatest Irish flute players that ever lived has passed away.

“His music will live forever in our hearts.

“May God Rest his soul.”

Michael shared a picture with Seamus alongside The Chieftains musician Matt Molloy.

Mr Tansey began on the tin whistle before he got his first flute in 1961 and won the All Ireland Fleadh in Thurles in 1965. He recorded five albums, one with Eddie Corcoran, and had a big influence on succeeding generations of flute players. Tansey is one of the references of the “Sligo Style” in Irish flute playing.

Musician Donie Keyes, who is the partner of Maura Higgins’ mother Sharon, also paid tribute to Mr Tansey, saying he had a “major influence” on him growing up.

He said: “I am saddened to hear of the passing of the great Seamus Tansey today. Seamus had a major influence on me when I started playing music and thankfully got the chance to tell him that on any occasion that I met him in later years.

“The very first cassette tape of Irish music that I ever owned was of him.

“My condolences to all his family at this sad and difficult time. Rest easy Seamus,” he added.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
