River of red wine flows through Portuguese town after distillery accident

On a fateful Sunday, a coastal village in Portugal experienced an unprecedented flooding event as an astonishing 600,000 gallons of red wine inundated the streets of São Lorenco de Bairro, a small town with a population of 2,000, according to reports from local sources.

The deluge was attributed to two tanks owned by Levira Distillery, and videos circulating online vividly depicted the crimson wine cascading down a steep hill, coursing through the town.

Remarkably, this torrent of alcohol did not result in any injuries but did cause substantial material damage. The red liquid overflowed onto nearby roads, fields, and even infiltrated at least one cellar, as reported by the Portuguese newspaper Diário de Coimbra.

Local media coverage indicated that this spill triggered a local environmental alert, prompting the Anadia Fire Department to take action to divert the wine and prevent the contamination of the nearby Certima River.

In response to the incident, Levira Distillery issued an apology and pledged to assume full responsibility for the expenses associated with the cleanup and repairs.

"We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately," it said in a statement. "We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible."

They promptly mobilized teams to address the situation, expressing their commitment to resolving it as expeditiously as possible.

Furthermore, the soil saturated with wine will be transported to a specialized treatment facility, as outlined by the company's plan for remediation.
