The word that ran the cosmos before anyone named it
Rita doesn't translate cleanly. That's the first thing to know. Every English rendering, cosmic order, truth, universal law, shaves off something the Sanskrit held together. Rita, as the Rigveda uses it, is not a rule handed down. It is the fact of things fitting. The sun rises because Rita holds. Rain falls in its season because Rita holds. A person speaks what is true and the world coheres a little more, because that too is Rita at work. You were not asked to obey it. You were assumed to be inside it. The Vedic seers didn't frame Rita as a command. They noticed it the way you notice that rivers run downhill, as a feature of the world that was already the case before you arrived to observe it.This is the quality that separates Rita from almost every moral concept that followed it in Indian thought. Rita is descriptive before it is prescriptive. It tells you what is, not what you should do. The obligation came later. And when it came, it arrived wearing a different name.
