RISHI Sunak and his family will visit Balmoral at the end of August to stay with the King and Queen.
The monarch will host the Prime Minister and his family at the Scottish royal retreat, where the King is expected to remain throughout September.
The i newspaper reported that it is expected that Charles (below) will discuss a range of topics with Sunak, including his climate change commitments.
Sunak and his family will also join the King and Queen for a variety of other activities, including walks, picnics and grouse shooting.
We previously told how the Tories were set to re-think their climate policies, a move that led the Scottish Greens to say the UK Government could “not be trusted” to tackle environmental issues.
No 10 has said that net zero policies must be “proportionate and pragmatic” and Sunak said that householders did not want to be “hassled” by unaffordable measures.
Michael Gove signalled that a 2035 deadline for a ban on installing gas boilers would be “eased off” for private landlords.
Downing Street and Buckingham Palace rarely comment on conversations between the Prime Minister and monarch, so it remains unknown if the King will express concern over the future of the Government’s bid to cut carbon emissions by 2050.
However, speaking to i on condition of anonymity, a former member of Charles’s staff said: “The King won’t lobby, but Rishi will likely say something and he will respond.”
The Balmoral gathering will come after weeks of record temperatures in southern Europe, which triggered widespread wildfires in countries such as Greece and Italy.
The King has previously been outspoken on green issues, having held a summit for business leaders at Buckingham Palace on the eve of Cop27.
Last year, The Times reported that there were tensions between the palace and No 10 over whether the King should attend Cop27 although it was mutually agreed under Liz Truss’s tenure that he should not go.
