Rishi Sunak says he loves John Lewis furniture and 'raps to Vanilla Ice at karaoke'

Tory leadership Rishi Sunak has boasted of snubbing cheap flatpack Ikea furniture and opting for John Lewis luxury instead.

The former Chancellor, who with heiress wife Akshata Murty is worth an estimated £730million, spoke of his love for the middle class department store’s products as he battled to rescue his flailing campaign to become Prime Minister.

In a highly personal interview with the Sunday Times, he also reportedly rapped Vanilla Ice’s 1990s club anthem Ice Ice Baby, as his "head bopped from side to side".

Claiming he would return to the modest Downing Street apartment above No10 - prime ministers since Tony Blair have used the larger No11 flat - if he beats Liz Truss to become PM, Mr Sunak said it was already fitted out how he likes it.

"We'd probably just move back into the flat where we used to live, to be honest. We have already decorated it and it's lovely,” he said.

“We love John Lewis in our house. Who doesn't love John Lewis? What's not to like?"

He added: "I have graduated from Ikea. That period in your life when you are dealing with those bloody Allan keys - I mean, God."

Mr Sunak, who trails his rival in the race for No10, also told how despite him being teetotal, his “family all drink, my wife definitely drinks”.

It “massively irritates her” that he does not, he said.

He did "do some shots" before he got married, but “didn't like the taste”.

The ex-Cabinet Minister also revealed he forced his police protection officers to switch off their favourite radio station in his armoured limousine when he became Chancellor in February 2020.

"When I got the job and I inherited the car and the police, it was a bit awkward as their default station was Classic FM," he admitted.

"After about half a day and then I just broke the ice and said, 'Guys, look, I'm really sorry, is it OK if we just have Capital?'"
